Simply Idly

A documentary

Subhikshaa, a good friend of mine, and my classmate at the time teamed up to create this documentary. We are both foodies so we knew we had to do something related to food. We decided to choose one of the most famous South Indian food - The Humble Idly.

When one thinks of South-Indian food, the humble idli is the first dish that comes to mind. Idli is a soft, pillowy steamed savory cake made from fermented rice and lentil batter. The lentils used in making idli are urad dal (black gram). The fermentation process breaks down the starches so that they are more readily metabolized by the body. Idli is a traditional breakfast made in every South Indian household. Idli is popular not only in the whole of India but outside India too.

"Simply Idly" contains a story of how a south Indian family starts their day off with idlis. It contains an interview with a nutritionist, discussing the health benefits of eating idlis. It also has an interview with the owner of a fast-food chain called "idlies" and with the owner of a roadside food stall. It discusses the process of preparing the idli batter and how to obtain ready-made batter as well.

This film was written, directed, and shot by Subhikshaa and me. It was shot in a day's time and edited within a week's time with a voiceover provided by me.
